Overview

Nationwide is the largest provider of pet health insurance in the United States. The company insures dogs, cats, birds, and exotic pets for medical conditions related to injuries, illness, medical conditions, and wellness care. With an A+ rating from A.M. Best, this company has an outstanding reputation for pet insurance.

Nationwide offers three different pet insurance coverage plans in all 50 states:

Whole Pet with Wellness: The most comprehensive plan offered by Nationwide, the Whole Pet with Wellness covers a wide range of routine treatments, illness, accident and emergency care, surgeries, vaccinations, and heartworm and flea treatment. With no age limit (you can enroll your puppy or your senior dog!), this plan covers 90 percent of your vet bills after you’ve met the deductible.

Major Medical: The Major Medical plan covers only emergencies and non-routine care. This includes surgeries, prescriptions, accidents, and some hereditary conditions. After your deductible, this plan offers a percentage of payout depending on the type of disease or condition being treated in your pet. Nationwide’s Major Medical plan covers only emergency and non-routine care. Nationwide uses a benefit schedule for any given condition/treatment that outlines the maximum amount you will get for reimbursement, regardless of what your vet charges. This sets Nationwide apart from the competitors.

Pet Wellness: The Pet Wellness plan is both the most affordable plan and most limited. It offers coverage for only wellness check-ups, routine treatments, and preventative care. This includes things like deworming treatments and heartworm prevention but excludes surgeries and emergency-type care.

No matter which plan you choose, all Nationwide policyholders have access to a 24/7 veterinary helpline.

Pros:

  • Submit your claims online and track them in real time

  • Unlimited claims for Whole Pet with Wellness & Major Medical plans

  • Offers exotic pet insurance

  • Claims paid out within 30 days

Cons:

  • 12-month waiting period for certain surgeries (ACL)

  • 14-day waiting period upon application approval and payment of premium

  • Major Medical plan has annual limits

  • Monthly transaction fee on top of regular premiums for those who pay monthly (rather than annually)

  • Does not cover travel-related care if you travel outside of the U.S. with your pet

Overall, Nationwide is a reputable, trustworthy pet insurance provider across all 50 states. Their coverage of exotic pets sets them apart from many competitors.
